The kill sprees of "Grand Theft Auto IV" were a bit crazy. The wild scrums of the "Saint's Row" series were rather over-the-top. And that whole "Undead Nightmare" in "Red Dead Redemption"? That was quite zany as well.
But even in a genre that's experienced plenty of storyline lunacy already, "Driver: San Francisco" manages to stand out for the tale it tells. The latest addition to the "Driver" series revitalizes Ubisoft's take on the sandbox car game, and it does it with one of the wildest conventions in the history of the genre.
John Tanner can shift his consciousness into the bodies of other citizens. At just about any moment in this romp through a beautifully realized San Fran, Tanner can hop out of one driver's body and into another. And you thought all those psycho zombies in "Crackdown" were wild? Now this is fun.
Ubisoft provides a wacky rationale for its new gaming device. Tanner, the protagonist from previous games in the franchise, has finally captured his nemesis, Jericho. As the game begins, Tanner and his partner are watching Jericho head for his execution. Moments later, though, they're chasing a newly escaped Jericho through the San Fran streets.
But when things backfire, Tanner ends up in a coma. The entire plot takes place in that coma, providing at least some reason for its complete ridiculousness.
"Driver: San Francisco's" story may be nonsensically wild, but that same tale helps yield some refreshing sandbox gameplay. Gone are the days when you needed to drive around an open city searching in vain for your next mission. Here, you simply leap out of your body, then get an overview of a few blocks as you choose your next body to snatch.
It's a surprisingly satisfying mechanic that prevents you from doing pointless driving. Yes, you can still cruise the city if you want to (and it's a city that's worth cruising, too). But no, you aren't likely to get lost as you search for your next mission objective.
Ubisoft takes other liberties, too. Tanner can also charge up cars, then release that charge to create a sort of battering ram effect. It's fun and random and nonsensical, and in "Driver: San Francisco," it fits perfectly.
The game makes sure the mechanics are well-used, too. As with other sandbox games, there are plenty of side missions in addition to the main quest of capturing Jericho. One such mode presents a particularly original challenge. In some races, you'll need to guide two cars to a 1-2 finish. How? By swapping bodies of both cars throughout the race.
Ubisoft draws major points for such originality, but the game has its share of stumbles, too. Story mode missions often feel too guided and restrictive, and in chase missions, if you don't stay glued to your target – if you attempt any dose of original thought and gamble on a cutoff point – you're forced to restart.
Then again, restarting never feels like too much of a task in "Driver: San Francisco" because the driving is solid. Ubisoft grabbed real licenses for its cars, and just about every vehicle looks great. This isn't a bland-looking sandbox game, either; the city looks great, and lighting effects glance off cars effectively.
The handling takes a little time to get used to, because the engine seems geared towards over-the-top turns and drifts and breaking. But give it a chance, because once you get used to it, you'll enjoy the highlight-film moments.
And "Driver: San Francisco" has plenty of those. Yes, the plot makes zero sense, and yes, the main gameplay convention is so lacking in realism that it makes Niko Bellic look pretty benign.
But now, that doesn't diminish this game. "Driver: San Francisco" is a refreshing sandbox game. And if you haven't sickened of the genre yet, it's worth a look.
